Mohali: In the latest development into the Chandigarh University video leak case, police on Friday said that Sanjeev Singh, the arrested man and an accused in the case, has blackmailed multiple women in the past.
Police had earlier claimed that the mobile number that Sanjeev used was the same where the female student, accused of leaking videos of other girl students of the hostel, used to send her private videos.
Police have meanwhile managed to retrieve some data with the help of the mobile number, which has also been mentioned in the FIR pertaining to the CU case. The data established that the army man had blackmailed other women as well, reported HT.
An officer privy to the CU video leak case investigation said, as quoted by HT, “The man’s number has been flagged as ‘scammer’ in a social media app. We also found a few comments and allegations by the app users, claiming that they were blackmailed by the person using the phone number.”
“However, the online flak won’t affect the investigation if the accused didn’t circulate the video of the female student or her hostel mates,” the officer added.
On the other hand, the all-woman, three-member SIT team, probing the case, is awaiting forensic analysis of the mobile phone of the accused for more clarity about his past details.
On the other hand, the investigation officials said that during interrogation, Sanjeev refuted the allegations of blackmailing the female student and claimed that he was in a relationship with her. He said that she herself shared her personal videos with him, reported HT.
In another development in the case, co-accused Rankaj Verma withdrew his bail plea on Friday. His counsel Harvinder Singh Johal said that Rankaj will file a fresh bail petition after adding more arguments to prove he isn’t guilty in the case.
“Rankaj never met any of the co-accused of the case. Police have not found any video from his mobile phone. We will file a fresh bail plea on Saturday,” said Johal.
Earlier on Thursday, police had told the court that Rankaj had confessed during interrogation that he had circulated the videos shared with him, and granting him bail will affect the probe, reported HT.
The four accused in the case, Sanjeev Singh, a native of Samba in Jammu and Kashmir, Sunny Mehta and Rankaj Verma, both residents of Himachal Pradesh, and the girl student were sent to five-day police remand which ends today.
