New Delhi: Alzheimer’s is a disease that affects the brain and it destroys the memory of a person. Eventually, over time the person cannot perform even the simplest of tasks. This is a condition that usually develops with age.
Since it becomes difficult for people to perform any sort of activities, they need the help and care of others at this point in time. But not everyone is willing to ask for help or take the help they require. Therefore, it becomes important that close ones take the initiative to provide care for the person.
Here are a few tips that will help you to take care of someone suffering from Alzheimer's:
  1. Be a part of support groups. These groups will provide emotional support in times of need and also they will help in times of need when the patient is critical or needs special care.
  2. Allow the person to do as much as they can do. For example, if they want to eat by themselves, allow them to do so and if they want to dress by themselves, let them do that— be flexible in your approach.
  3. Create a safe environment for the patient. With Alzheimer's, patients tend to forget about their surroundings as well. So keep things within their reach and try and make the space suitable for them so that they don't fall or hurt themselves when searching for something.
  4. Help to keep up their self-esteem. Plan activities which they can do easily without failing. This will help to keep their energies high rather and boost their confidence.
