Beer can, UP man can't: Hathras teacher, caught drinking while teaching students, struggles to hide alcohol

A teacher in UP, who was allegedly caught drinking while teaching students at a Hathras-based school, has been suspended. Identified as Shailendra Singh Gautam, the assistant teacher could be seen in a now-viral video trying to hide beer cans during class at DRB Intercollege when confronted by the staff Friday.

Hathras, Uttar Pradesh: Teachers have great influence over a fairly-suggestible young population and can be catalysts for change — for better or worse and inappropriate behaviour can bring disgrace to a profession as noble as teaching. Luckily, this man was held accountable for his actions.

In the clip, Shaildenra appeared to initially ask the colleague not to film him citing his professional allegiance to the man. The person off camera can then be heard threatening the teacher he will record him and report his inappropriate conduct in front of minors.

Delhi Commission for Women chairperson and social activist, Swati Maliwal shared the video from the incident on Twitter, urging UP police to take action against the teacher.

"Drunk master ji is teaching children, girls in a state of intoxication. The video is said to be from Hathras, UP. If the teachers — who are the shapers of the children's future do such a thing — can the future of the children be good? Take action on this teacher immediately @Uppolice,” the 37-year-old said in a post.

Suspended, under investigation

District Magistrate (DM) Ramesh Ranjan, taking cognisance of the incident, directed the college administration to hold the drunk teacher accountable. According to media reports, a manager named Swatantra Kumar Gupta subsequently suspended Shailendra.

A three-member committee is now investigating the whole matter.
