Covid pandemic is over in United States, asserts President Joe Biden

Interestingly, the US President's remarks have come only a couple of weeks after his administration sought billions of dollars in funding from Congress to maintain its testing and vaccine programmes in order to curb any future wave.

New York: US President Joe Biden on Sunday asserted that a lot of working is still going on it but the Covid pandemic is effectively over in the country.

During an interview with a TV channel, he said, "The pandemic is over. We still have a problem with Covid. We're still doing a lot of work on it..., but the pandemic is over."

"If you notice, no one's wearing masks," Biden said, gesturing around the hall. "Everybody seems to be in pretty good shape. And so I think it's changing," he added.

With Covid restrictions largely eliminated in the country and travel having rebounded to pre-pandemic levels, the comments were reflective of the current status of much of US society.

When asked whether he will seek a second term in 2024, despite previously having stated he will run again, Joe Biden remained coy on the matter and said "it remains to be seen.

Biden, who turns 80 in November, said that reelection is his intention. "But it's just an intention. But is it a firm decision that I run again? That remains to be seen."

"It's much too early," Biden said, calling himself "a great respecter of fate."

When it was pointed out that he was already the oldest person ever in the job, Biden shot back: "pretty good shape, huh?"
