Pune: The collective water stock in four dams in the Khadakwasla area which supply water to Pune city has dropped below 10 per cent. The water levels in the reservoirs have slipped as the catchment areas of these four dams have only received scarce rainfall of less than 100 mm since June 1 this year.
On Tuesday, the collective stock in the four dams was recorded at 2.71 TMC (9.3 per cent). With the entire storage being reserved to meet the drinking water requirements of the city and rural population, the area may attract water cuts if the water stocks keep slipping in the days to come.
The state irrigation department has said that the Panshet dam had received 80mm of rainfall till Tuesday morning, while Varasgaon and Temghar had witnessed 76mm and 41mm of rainfall, respectively.
By this time last year, all these dams had recorded more than 350mm of rain with the Temghar dam had crossing 500mm on June 28 last year. The collective water stock was at 8.5 TMC which is about 6 TMC more than Tuesday's storage.
Irrigation department officials said the catchment areas of the dams recorded a few spells of rainfall on Monday and Tuesday and it is keeping a watch on the water levels in the dams on a regular basis. The department further requested the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to use water judiciously.
The water stock in Bhama Askhed, the fifth dam supplying water to eastern part of the city, was at 2.26 TMC as compared to the water storage in Khadakwasla circle.
