New Delhi: The Centre has mandated that Post Office account holders will now have to submit their passbooks at the time of closure/premature closure of any of their accounts.
The new notification would apply on the closure/premature closure of any Recurring Deposit/Term Deposit/Monthly Income Scheme (MIS)/Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS)/Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP) and National Savings Certificate (NSC) account.
In a circular dated January 13, 2022, the Department of Posts (DoP) under the supervision of the Ministry of Communications, Government of India, stated, "At the time of closure/premature closure of any TDA type of accounts (RD/TD/MIS/SCSS/KVP and NSC), all single and double handed post offices (including BOs) shall collect closed passbook from the account holders. The closure entry is to be noted after last transaction in the passbook by the post office concerned with date stamp."
After verification of the account closure, the supervisor will generate and print "account closure report" and give it to the account holder as an acknowledgment. In case a depositor requests for an account statement, it may be given in lieu of a passbook without any charges.
It is important to note that while the closing any of the accounts mentioned above, the holder must ensure that their mobile number and PAN is updated in the account. If it is not, the holder's financial transactions would be restricted to certain amounts.
How to close a Post Office account:
To close their accounts, holders can visit https://www.indiapost.gov.in/VAS/DOP_PDFFiles/form/Closure.pdf and download the application form.
After filling the form completely, they need to visit their branch office to submit it along with the passbook.
The account holder may also reach out to the Customer Care by dialing the toll free number 1800 266 6868 between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
