Chennai: In a shocking incident reported from Tamil Nadu capital Chennai, three masked robbers looted at least 32-kg gold worth several crore from a bank after they locked staff in the toilet. The incident took place at FedBank Gold Loan in the Arumbakkam area of the city.
Police said the robbery was said to be an inside job. The robbers took away the keys of the strong room and locked the employees in the toilet and decamped with the looted gold, said Shankar Jeewal, Chennai Police Commissioner.
Police suspect that one of the robbers could be a present 'employee' of the bank, according to a report in NDTV.
Cops say the bank officials are conducting audit of the gold. "Only after the inventory audit we would have the exact figure," said a police officer.
Meanwhile, a purported video of a security guard posted at the bank branch has emerged wherein he reportedly said that he went unconscious after he consumed a soft drink offered by the suspected robbers.
A police officer said that all employees are fine now. The security guard did not suspect anything wrong since one of the 'robbers' was an employee. Only some staff came to the bank today for accounts work as the facility was closed.
Police said they have formed special teams to arrest the accused.
