Afghanistan Earthquake kills more than 1000 people: Latest Developments

At least 1,000 people were killed and 1,500 were wounded in an earthquake that struck Afghanistan. The earthquake is the deadliest to strike Afghanistan in two decades. Measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale the earthquake struck a remote border region of Afghanistan near Pakistan overnight. The toll is expected to rise as workers carry out rescue operations in collapsed dwellings.

The death toll from a powerful earthquake in Afghanistan yesterday has reached 1000. More than 600 people were injured in the disaster with the toll expected to grow as rescue efforts are ongoing amidst several houses and buildings that have collapsed.
According to The United States Geological Survey (USGS) , the quake struck about 28 miles southwest of the city of Khost and had a depth of about six miles. Raees Hozaifa, the director of information and culture in the eastern province of Paktika, said that the earthquake was felt across several provinces.
Here are the latest developments in Afghanistan:
  1. Afghanistan’s Deputy Minister of State for Disaster Management Mawlawi Sharafuddin Muslim has said that the government would provide emergency relief to Afghans affected by the earthquake.
  2. A press statement by the diplomatic missions of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan also emphasised the need for foreign assistance. It read “Islamic Republic of Afghanistan calls for the generous support of all countries international organizations individuals and foundations to provide and deliver urgent humanitarian aid,” according to the statement.
  3. Mohammad Almas, the head of aid and appeals at Qamar, a charity in Afghanistan active in the area, said he expected the death toll to be high, as the area is far from hospitals and because the earthquake happened at night when most people were indoors sleeping, as reported by The New York Times.
  4. According to a report in Reuters, most of the confirmed deaths were in the eastern province of Paktika, where 255 people were killed and more than 200 people have been injured. In the province of Khost, 25 were dead and 90 had been taken to the hospital.
  5. Recent flooding in many regions has added to the challenge for Afghan authorities, the flooding had killed 11, injured 50, and blocked several stretches of highway.
  6. Tremors were felt across more than 500km of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Witnesses reported feeling the quake in Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, as well as Pakistan's capital, Islamabad. However, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage in Pakistan, according to BBC Urdu.
