Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has kick-started preparations for the upcoming Ganeshotsav with its Solid Waste Management Department deciding to build 150 ‘immersion tanks on wheels’ during the 10-11 day period of the festival.
Along with mobile immersion tanks, the civic body will also have provisions for 135 fixed tanks for immersion across the city.
The immersions of the Ganesha sculptures/idols are performed after one and a half days, five, seven and ten days of the Ganeshotsav and the civic body has planned the the construction of immersion tanks accordingly.
This year, 150 mobile tanks will be set up by the Solid Waste Department. Arrangements will be made separately from the fifteen zonal offices of the Municipal Corporation.
Apart from this, immersion tanks will be constructed at 136 places in different parts of the city this year. The municipal corporation has stated that the expenses, including cleaning, painting, lighting, and others such things of the fixed tanks, have been approved.
According to Municipal Commissioner, Administrator Vikram Kumar, in 2021, during the implementation of the concept of a mobile immersion tank, a case where the contractor was paid even when the vehicles were stopped at the spot had come up. However, the municipal corporation has assured that preventive measures to avoid similar incidents will be taken this year as well.
The city will witness the public Ganeshotsav celebrations in all its glory this year after restricted celebrations in the last two years. A joint meeting of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pune City Police, and Ganeshotsav Mandals' representatives was held on August 8 to discuss pending issues of the public Ganeshotsav Mandals.
