On the first day of the monsoon session of the Parliament, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman submitted a written reply in the Lok Sabha on the contentious issue of cryptocurrency regulation. Sitharaman stated in her note that the Reserve Bank of India has previously batted for a ban on cryptocurrencies and registered its concerns about the adverse effects that these alternative assets could have on the economy. The Finance Minister added that any legislation on cryptos will be effective only with international cooperation given that crypto assets are borderless, and also urged global collaboration to prevent regulatory arbitrage.
