India's campaign in the men's hockey event at 2022 Commonwealth Games ended with a forgettable defeat to Australia on Monday (August 7). The much awaited gold medal match turned out to be a one-sided affair as the tokyo olympics bronze medalist failed to give a strong fight to the Australians.
Ex-Indian hockey team captain Viren Rasquinha used the opportunity to take a cheeky dig at the International Hockey Federation (FIH). Rasquinha hilariously questioned the sport's governing body on why there was a clock malfunction in this match as India suffered a big defeat.
"On a lighter note, why couldn’t FIH stop the f*#%* clock earlier today??," wrote Rasquinha on his Twitter account in an evident dig at the events of the women's semi-final between the two countries.
The India women's hockey team's clash against Australia in the semi-final turned out to be a thrilling game which went into the semi-final. However, the game recorded one of the biggest controversies of the 2022 edition of the CWG as after India saved Australia's first attempt, the match officials directed the penalty to be retaken after it was discovered that the clock was not working.
This ended up completely changing the momentum of the game as Australia ended up scoring in all three attempts while India could not score even one. After that game, the Indian women's team clinched the bronze medal after beating New Zealand while Australia lost the final to England.
Talking about the men's tournament, this was the 7th successive time that Australia has won the gold medal. In fact, since the introduction of hockey in the CWG roster in 1998, the Kookaburras have won the gold in every edition. This included a 8-0 win over India in Delhi during the 2010 games in the gold medal. The 2014 final in Glasgow also saw a clash between Australia and India which the men in yellow won comfortably by a 4-0 margin.
