KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Ajinkya Rahane asked Yashasvi Jaiswal to leave the field on Sunday.
  • The captain took the decision after he didn’t improve his habits despite multiple warnings.
  • West Zone didn’t opt for a substitute fielder and continued to do the job with 10 players on the field.
In a bizarre incident during the final day’s play of the ongoing Duleep Trophy final between West Zone and South Zone in Coimbatore, former Indian Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, who is leading the West Zone side in the match, has asked his teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal to leave the field.
The 20-year-old Mumbaikar, who scored 265 off 323 balls in the second innings for the West Zone side and helped them set a target of 529 runs for the South Zone, was seen having a conversation with Rahane during the first session on Sunday (September 25) and after that he was captured leaving the field.
Jaiswal was continuously chirping around South Zone batter Ravi Teja, who complained about it and got Yashasvi two warnings from Rahane after umpires' intervention. But he didn’t improve his habits, after which, in a valuable captaincy lesson for the young chap, Rahane calmly walked up to him and asked him to leave the field. The team didn’t replace him with another substitute player and decided to field with 10 players only.
Sunday is the last day of the Duleep Trophy final, and the star-studded West Zone side is looking all set to secure a big win over the South Zone and win the prestigious trophy for one more time.
The South Zone were struggling at 226 for 8 in 68.2 overs, still short of the required total by 303 runs at the time this report was filed. They can be crowned winners if they manage to bat throughout the day, as they have an advantage of taking the lead in the first innings. But it looks highly unlikely that something like this will happen because all the recognisable batters have returned back to the dugout and only the tailenders are left at the crease.
Talking about the hero of the game, then it was undoubtedly Jaiswal, as his record-breaking double century in the second innings fueled West Zone hopes. During his stay at the crease, the left-handed opening batter scored 30 fours and 4 sixes.
