International Yoga Day: Asanas that will help with asthma symptoms

Yoga is a form of workout which alleviates almost all forms of discomfort. Following proper procedures and breathing in the correct way while performing yoga will help to bring the condition under control because asthma has no cure.

New Delhi: Asthma is a condition where one suffers from breathing issues when exposed to certain factors like dust, extreme cold or certain allergy-causing factors. It is characterised by swollen and inflamed airways that make breathing difficult. Along with that, one might also face tightness in the chest and also severe coughing and sneezing. The symptoms and severity of the conditions vary from person to person.

Here are some asanas that will provide relief to the lungs and also make your lungs healthy for the long run.
  1. Uttanasana or standing forward bending pose: This pose helps alleviate the symptoms of asthma by opening up the airways. Stand straight on your mat and breathe in and bend down from your hips and hold your breath for 10 seconds. Breath out while standing back. Do this asana five times to get benefits. (Try to touch your nose to your legs.)
  2. Sukhasana or easy pose: This asana helps the body to relax while focusing on breathing. In this asana, you will have to sit down on the floor and keep your back straight. Now keep your hands on your knees and start breathing, inhale slowly and exhale slowly. Focus on your breathing and do this for five minutes.
  3. Pranayama is a part of yoga that deals only with breathing. People suffering from asthma can include pranayama asanas in their routine which will help their lungs and respiratory system.
  4. Anulom Vilom: This is a pranayama which focuses on breathing using one nostril for inhalation and the other nostril for exhalation. You have to use two nostrils alternatively for inhalation and exhalation. Sit in a comfortable position and keep your spine straight. Close your right nostril with your thumb and inhale through your left nostril. Now, close your left nostril and exhale through your right nostril. Now inhale through your right nostril and exhale from your left nostril.
