For a young bowler, who hasn't even played first-class cricket, wickets of players who are some of the best in the world become a lifetime memory. For the 21-year-old Roman Walker, things transpired on the similar lines on the first day of the warm-up game, playing for Leicestershire against the visiting Indian team.
Wrexham's Walker was one of the nine local players representing Leicestershire while four Indian players made the whole side. The visitors opted to bat first and after some resistance, the Leicestershire bowlers broke through the opening partnership. Will Davis got the first one of Shubman Gill, however, after that, it was all Walker.
Walker first dismissed the Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who didn't bat in the second innings after testing positive for COVID-19. His next scalps included the names of Hanuma Vihari, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur and the biggest of the lot, Virat Kohli.
For any young bowler, the wicket of the Kohlis, Joe Roots, Steve Smiths and Babar Azams of the world in the current era is the one that they will remember for their life as they were able to deceive the best of the best and for Walker, he realised the same after the first day's play and even his friends were of the same view.
Talking to Leicestershire's media team on Foxes TV, Walker said, “You want to play against India when they come along. (I was) Surprised to take 5. Kohli’s wicket was a nice moment for me. A couple of my mates texted me saying there's one for the grandkids."
Kohli was batting on 33 before an outswinger from Walker caught him unaware and hit him on the pads. The umpire didn't take his time in raising his finger and the batter had to walk back. While the likes of Rishabh Pant, Cheteshwar Pujara in the opposition naturally celebrated as they got the big fish, the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna playing for the home side also troubled the Indian batters and Walker reckoned that it was a great experience for him to learn from the senior internationals.
“It's a great thing to learn from the other end. Just talking to him about options, how to play different bowlers, very valuable. Yeah, they are great blokes. I mean, they talked to me almost every ball whenever there was room for a bit of advice," he added.
As for the game, India were 366 runs ahead in the second innings as the match moves into the final day after Shreyas Iyer and Ravindra Jadeja came to bat again since Rohit didn't bat on Day 3.
