Five-time Ballon D'or winner Cristiano Ronaldo could be on the move this summer after it has emerged that the Portuguese Superstar has asked to leave Manchester United in order to play Champions League football. Ronaldo had made a dream return to Old Trafford only last year after sensational transfer from Juventus that saw the Red Devils beat their city rivals Manchester City to his signature.
English Premier League giants Chelsea have emerged a potential destination for the Manchester United star. According to a report by The Athletic, the club's new co-owner Todd Boehly had a meeting with Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes in which a move for the ex-Real Madrid star was discussed. It is reported that conversations between Mendes and Boehly have continued since.
Reportedly, Boehly and fellow Chelsea director Behdad Eghbali whose consortium brough the club earlier this year for a deal worth £4.25 billion are attracted by the possibility of signing an iconic figure like Ronaldo.
However, they key to any potential transfer will be Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel's opinion. While Tuchel is a long-term admirer of Ronaldo, it is not clear if the German sees Ronaldo fitting into his long-term plan and system. Any possible transfer will only happen after conversations between Tuchel and the Manchester United legend.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils maintain that Ronaldo is not for sale and he will stay at the club this summer and expected him to fulfill his contract which will end in 2023.
Ronaldo was expect to return to Carrington for pre-season training on Monday (July 4) but he did not turn up citing family reasons. There is no clarity when he will start training again for the club and meet new manager Erik ten Hag for the first time.
Ronaldo was United's top goalscorer last season having scored 18 goals in the Premier League and 24 in all competitions. The 20-time champions had their worst-ever season in the Premier League era as far as points tally is concerned. They finished 6th with 58 points to their and will play the Europa League.
