Uddhav Thackeray tests positive for COVID-19 amid Maharashtra political crisis

Earlier in the day, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari also tested positive for Covid-19.
Mumbai: Amid the ongoing political crisis in Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena received another setback on Wednesday as party chief Uddhav Thackeray tested positive for COVID-19. This was confirmed by Congress leader Kamal Nath, who was due to meet him.
Uddhav will now hold virtual meetings instead of physical ones in a bid to steer his MVA government out of the political crisis.
"Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray has tested positive for COVID-19," Congress observer for the state, Kamal Nath told the reporters.
It was reported that Uddhav is currently chairing a Cabinet meeting virtually due to his ill health.
Due to the sudden development, Kamal Nath was unable to meet the CM amid the escalating government crisis.
"We had a meeting with Uddhav Thackeray but he has tested positive for Covid. That's why I cannot meet him," Kamal Nath told reporters.
Earlier in the day, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari also tested positive for Covid-19.
The Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi government led by the Shiv Sena plunged into crisis as rebel party leader Eknath Shinde flew to Guwahati in BJP-ruled Assam this morning along with dozens of Sena legislators and Independent MLAs. Shinde has said that 40 Sena MLAs out of the total 55 and six Independents are supporting his rebellion.
The MLAs led by Shinde flew to Guwahati from Surat in Gujarat where they had been holed up since Monday night after the conclusion of the MLC election in Maharashtra where alleged cross-voting by Shiv Sena MLAs led to the defeat of a Congress candidate.
The Shiv Sena, which leads the MVA government, has 55 MLAs, while allies NCP and the Congress have 53 and 44 MLAs each, respectively, in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly. The current simple majority mark is 144.
