Chahal should have desire to play red-ball cricket: Ex-India cricketer on wrist-spinner's Test career

Yuzvendra Chahal has been an India international since 2016 but hasn't yet made his Test debut. Former India cricketer Nikhil Chopra feels Chahal will be a success in the longest format of the game.

When it comes to wrist-spinners, Yuzvendra Chahal is among the best in business in modern-day cricket. Yet, he doesn't have even a single Test cap to his name. Chahal has often been snubbed for a spot in India's Test team despite the success he has had in white-ball cricket.
As Chahal continues to wait for his maiden Test call-up, former India cricketer Nikhil Chopra feels Chahal would be a success in Test cricket if he has the desire to play the longest format of the game.
“The most important thing is that Yuzvendra Chahal should have a desire to play red-ball cricket. It’s a passion that automatically comes to a Test cricketer. The kind of intellect Chahal possesses, he will surely be a success in the longer format. Passion will be key,” he said in a chat with Crictracker.
As far as Chahal's own desire goes, earlier this year, he had said that he wishes to play Test cricket for India.
“Definitely I want to,” Chahal had said on ESPNCricinfo when asked about his Test ambitions earlier this year.
“I have taken 50 wickets in my last 10 Ranji Trophy matches. Definitely, Test cricket is my first priority. I think being called a Test player has a different aura. A lot of players play ODIs and T20Is, but it is in Test cricket where your skills and patience gets tested,” he said.
It also has to be noted that Chahal hasn't played a First-Class match since December 2018. When it comes to ODIs and T20Is, Chahal has been more-or-less an ever-present figure in the Indian team over the last few years.
He has 67 ODIs and 62 T20Is under his belt so far, picking up 118 and 79 wickets respectively.
