A food cart owner has been arrested by the police for allegedly beating up two unidentified ragpickers in Saswad. The police informed that the ragpickers have died due to the thrashing. A 65-year-old woman was also assaulted and injured by the accused. The unidentified men were around 50-60 years of age. On May 24, they were found lying injured near Bhongale wine shop.

Pune: A food cart owner has been arrested by the police for allegedly beating up two unidentified ragpickers in Saswad. The police informed that the ragpickers have died due to the thrashing. A 65-year-old woman was also assaulted and injured by the accused.
The accused identified as Nilesh alias Pappu Jaywant Jagtap is a resident Tathewadi village in Saswad. He has been arrested on charges of murder. A case was registered against him on May 30, reported The Indian Express.
The unidentified men were around 50-60 years of age. On May 24, they were found lying injured near Bhongale wine shop, said the police. Upon receiving the information, a team of Saswad police rushed to the spot and took them to Sassoon Hospital. One of the men was declared dead on arrival. The other man died in the hospital on May 30. Initially, a case of accidental death was registered.
Meanwhile, a witness told the police that the accused, Jagtap thrashed the two men as well as a woman on May 23. The woman has been identified as Shevantabhai Sakharam Jadhav. He thrashed them with a stick because they used to sit near his food cart.
The police told that during the attack, Jadhav sustained severe injuries on her hand, while the two unidentified men collapsed on the spot. After that Jagtap allegedly poured hot water on one of the men as they were not responding. The man started crying out loud. A crowd gathered at the spot, upon hearing the cries. Jagtap allegedly hit the victims on the next days as well while they were lying unconscious, said the police.
The police then arrested Jagtap based on the statements of the witness and Jadhav. Jadhav is a resident of Khandoba Nagar in Saswad. Jagtap has been arrested under Indian Penal Code sections 302 (murder), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means).
The police is making attempts to identify the deceased persons. Further investigation is on, said Inspector Annasaheb Gholap of Saswad police station.
