Guwahati: A man was lynched to death by a mob after they suspected him of being a child-lifter. The incident took place in the Dhemaji district of Assam. The victim who is said to be in his 30s was mentally unstable. His identity has not been revealed, as reported by the Hindustan Times.
A group of residents of Rakut Koke village in Jonai committed the act. According to Dhemaji’s deputy superintendent of police (headquarters) AT Doley, “We got information around 7:30pm that a mob was assaulting a person. When the police team reached the area, the person had already sustained severe injuries and was unconscious. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.” as reported by the Hindustan Times.
The deceased had allegedly picked up a child from a mother’s lap following which the woman began to scream. Hearing her cries a large crowd gathered and started attacking the man. “Initial investigation revealed that the person was mentally unstable for the past 15 years. When the mob started questioning him, he may have failed to give any satisfactory answers, which in turn angered them. This is a case of mob lynching,” said Doley, as reported by the Hindustan Times.
A case of murder has been registered and seven villagers have been detained for further questioning. Further investigations are being carried out. In another similar incident at Silapathar in the same district, a mob began attacking an old man when a police team luckily rescued him. Similarly in June, 2018, two youths from Guwahati, Nilotpal Das (29), a sound engineer and his friend Abhijeet Nath (30), a businessman, were lynched to death by a group of villagers in Karbi Anglong district on suspicion of being child abductors, reported the Hindustan Times.
