New Delhi: Anshu Jain, former co-chief executive officer of Deutsche Bank AG has passed away aged 59 after battling duodenal cancer for 5 years. The 59-year-old was diagnosed with the condition in 2017. Jain was currently serving as the president of Cantor Fitzgerald LP.
What is duodenal cancer?
Duodenal cancer is a fast-growing tumour in the first part of your small intestine, the duodenum. The duodenum is a horseshoe-shaped part of the small intestine and the food passes through this part during the digestive process. During the process of digestion, when the food passes through the duodenum, it is broken down by the enzymes and the vitamins and minerals are sent to different parts of the body. In the initial stages of duodenal cancer, one might not find any major symptoms other than nausea or vomiting or constipation as the tumours tend to affect the process of digestion. It is only during the later stages or when the cancer has advanced and spread to other parts of the body that it is diagnosed.
The cause of duodenal cancer is unknown, however, it starts with the growth of small polyps in the inner lining of the duodenum. The initial symptoms of duodenal cancer are abdominal pain, frequent acid reflux, blood in the stool, constipation, and unexplained weight loss among others. It is important that you keep a check on such symptoms and not ignore them as they could be the early sign of a deadly disease.
What are the different types of duodenal cancer?
  1. Adenocarcinoma: In this form of cancer, the glandular cells produce digestive chemicals, mucus, and other bodily fluids from internal organs.
  2. Sarcoma: This is a type of malignant tumour that forms in the bone or soft tissues of the body such as fat, muscles and blood vessels.
  3. Lymphoma: In this form of cancer, the immune system is affected.
  4. Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour: In this form of cancer, the tumours are formed in the walls of the gastrointestinal tract.
  5. Carcinoid Tumors: In this type of cancer, tumours are formed in the gastrointestinal tract and they can cause carcinoid syndrome. These tumours can also spread to other sites and organs in the body.
