Meta's global instant messaging platform - Whatsapp on Saturday published its monthly report for the month of August 2022. According to the report, the platform banned 23,28,000 bad accounts between 1st August 2022 and 31st August 2022, 1,008,000 of these accounts were proactively banned, before any reports from users.
WhatsApp India publishes the monthly report in accordance with Rule 4(1)(d) of the Indian Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
“In accordance with the IT Rules 2021, we’ve published our report for the month of August 2022. This user-safety report contains details of the user complaints received and the corresponding action taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp’s own preventive actions to combat abuse on our platform. As captured in the latest Monthly Report, WhatsApp banned over 2.3 million accounts in the month of August.” The company said in a statement.
Earlier, in the month of July, the messaging platform had banned a similar number, at over 23 lakh accounts in the country, and 22 lakh accounts in June. For the month of August, WhatsApp received 598 grievance reports from India, and the platform actioned 19 of the reports. Out of the 598 grievance reports, 449 reports were for ban appeal, and the rest were under other categories like support and safety.
“In addition to responding to and actioning on user complaints through the grievance channel, WhatsApp also deploys tools and resources to prevent harmful behavior on the platform. We are particularly focused on prevention because we believe it is much better to stop harmful activity from happening in the first place than to detect it after harm has occurred,” the company said.
Comparing the numbers to the previous month, in July 2022, WhatsApp received 574 grievance reports, and the messaging platform actioned on 27 of them.
"WhatsApp is an industry leader in preventing abuse, among end-to-end encrypted messaging services. Over the years, we have consistently invested in Artificial Intelligence and other state-of-the-art technology, data scientists and experts, and in processes, in order to keep our users safe on our platform." The statement added.
