KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jasprit Bumrah smashed 35 overs in the 84th over by Stuart Broad.
  • He thus broke Brian Lara's long standing record of scoring the most runs in a single Test Match over.
  • Bumrah also took the opening two wickets of England in the second innings.
Jasprit Bumrah is currently leading the Indian side against England in the rescheduled fifth match after skipper Rohit Sharma tested positive for COVID-19 and vice-captain KL Rahul was unavailable for selection due to a groin injury. He became the first fast bowler to captain India in Test Matches since Kapil Dev in 1987 and the first bowler to do so
However, Bumrah's records didn't just end there. When he came out to bat, he faced Stuart Broad, who had just taken his 550th Test wicket in the form of Mohammad Shami. However, Bumrah smashed the ball to the boundary every now and then to score 35 runs in the over of the ace English fast bowler. He thus broke Brian Lara's record to score the most runs in a single over in the history of Test Matches. In fact Broad bowled five extras during this record breaking over.
In the midst of this onslaught, Jasprit Bumrah at one point of time did something that shocked all and sundry. In the fourth ball of the quite prolonged over, Broad bowled a half of length delivery and Bumrah attempted a short arm pull. However, the Indian skipper lost his balance and he fell over, as the ball went for a boundary.
A replay showed that while falling over, Bumrah's foot hit the leg stump quite forcefully, but to everyone's amusement the bails did not even move an inch. Thus Bumrah was saved from being hit-wicket and giving Broad his second wicket off the game. Bumrah played a fantastic cameo of 31 from 16 balls at the end of the innings.
In the first innings of the game, India scored 416 runs riding on the back of two impressive centuries from Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja. In addition to that swashbucking cameo, Bumrah also took two wickets as England came out to bat for their first innings. At the end of nine overs in the rain-curtailed Day 2, England were on a score of 41/2, trailing by 375 runs.
