Former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Pallonji Mistry, 54, was killed in a road accident in Maharashtra's Palghar on Sunday. He is survived by his wife and two children.
The tragedy occurred when his Mercedes, in which he was returning to Mumbai from Ahmedabad, "banged into a divider" near Charoti in Palghar on Sunday. The accident took place on a bridge on the Surya river.
According to the police, out of the four people in the car at the time of accident, Jahangir Dinshaw Pandole and Mistry were killed while Anahita Pandole, an activist from Mumbai who fought against hoardings at Marine Lines, alongside her husband Darius Pandole, the managing director and CEO of JM Financial Private Equity, were seriously injured. Anahita was driving.
"The accident took place around 3.15 pm, when Mistry was travelling to Mumbai from Ahmedabad. The accident took place on a bridge over the Surya river. It seems an accident," PTI quoted a police official as saying.
Mistry, an Irish-Indian businessman and the sixth chairman of Tata Sons, was ousted in 2016 after a bitter court battle. He shot to prominence after when was chosen to lead one of the oldest business groups in India after Ratan Tata stepped down in 2012.
Shapoorji Palonji Group, the largest shareholder in Tata Sons, which holds a 18.4% stake in the company, nominated Mistry to lead the conglomerate in 2012. Mistry's net worth as of 2018 was estimated to be $10 billion.
Mistry was the youngest son of the late billionaire Pallonji Mistry, who led the Shapoorji Pallonji group which is engaged across segments like engineering and construction, infrastructure, real estate, water, energy and financial services.
Mistry was married to Rohiqa Chagla, the daughter of lawyer Iqbal Chagla and granddaughter of jurist MC Chagla.
