A former resident of the USA's Florida was reunited with her dog 8 years after the canine disappeared.
In 2013, Betsy DeHaan adopted a pit bull named Harley from Lee County Domestic Animal Services in Fort Myers, Florida and the dog went missing a year later.
“I turned them out to go to the bathroom. Turned my back for a second and they went off into the woods,” she recalled the February 2014 disappearance. “And we went looking and never found Harley,” the woman added.
The Lee County family pulled out all stops to reunite with their pit bull.
“We searched and cruised and looked and put up posters and sent out the wanted, missing pet and just never stopped looking for him,” she said.
Eventually, they moved all the way to the state of Missouri in the Midwestern US and never got another dog. DeHaan said they had lost all hopes of ever seeing Harley again, according to Wink News.
However, not only was Harley alive, he was found thanks to his microchip.
Last week on July 2, 2022, Lee County Domestic Animal Services (LCDAS) responded to an address after a dog described as a pit bull was found malnourished and with “extremely long nails” in the neighbourhood.
“LCDAS learned that the dog, later identified as “Harley”, was equipped with a microchip and her owner was identified as Betsy DeHaan,” Lee County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook post.
DeHaan drove a distance of 1,100 miles (over 1,900 kilometres) from her house in Missouri to reunite with her dog in Florida over the 4th of July weekend.
“Oh my God! Harley! Hi buddy! Oh my God,” the woman exclaimed upon meeting Harley 8 years after he went missing.
Even though he was found to be skinnier and smaller than when he left her, she said he’ll never go hungry again.
