London: United States President and First Lady Jill Biden arrived in London on late Saturday to attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. The funeral will take place on Monday at London's Westminster Abbey. The US President's plane arrived at London Stansted Airport at around 10 pm local time, reported AFP.
Biden and his wife were greeted at the airport by UK Ambassador Jane Hartley, Lord Lieutenant of Essex Jennifer Tolhurst and others. The US President is expected to sign the official condolence book.
Biden will also attend the reception hosted by King Charles III at Buckingham Palace on Sunday, a day before the Queen's funeral. Apart from Biden, many other world leaders will attend the last rites of Queen Elizabeth II.
After the Queen's demise, Biden ordered flags at the White House and other federal buildings to be lowered to half-staff. Before coming to London, he spoke with King Charles III to offer his condolences and also went to the British Embassy.
Notably, hundreds of world leaders and foreign royals will attend the Queen's funeral. However, heads of a few countries, including Russia, Belarus, Afghanistan, Syria and North Korea have not been invited to the funeral due to political considerations
The longest-serving British Monarch will be laid to rest on September 19. The Queen died on September 8 at Balmoral at the age of 96 years. Immediately after Queen Elizabeth II's death, her eldest son Charles became the King. Charles III was formally proclaimed as the King on September 10.
