Several big-budget Bollywood films faced the wrath of netizens in the recent past. Movies like Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha and Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Brahmastra: Part One - Shiva encountered boycott trends as the actors drew flak for different reasons. Aamir was slammed for his old 'intolerance' comment. On the other hand, RK was stopped from entering an Ujjain temple after his 'I am a beef guy' remark surfaced online.
The latest film to draw flak is Om Raut's mythological movie Adipurush, which has been accused of 'misrepresenting' the Hindu epic Ramayana and depicting its characters wrongly. However, even amid severe backlash, dialogue writer Manoj Muntashir is sure his film will be welcomed by Lord Ram's devotees with open arms.
In an exclusive interview with Times Now, the lyricists and dialogue writer spoke at length about the criticism. When asked if the boycott trend is making him nervous given how it affected the previous films, he said, "Jo log boycott karte hai, unke apne sach hai, unke apni vishwas hai. Unke mat ka bhi samman hona chahiye. Aisa nahi hai ki boycott yun hi kiya jata hai. Koi naraazgi hai. Filmmaker ko use sunna chahiye, jaise ki hum sunrahe hai. Hum sab sun rahe hai. Humne toh Bhagwan Ram ki stooti mein, unki prashansa mein film banayi hai, iske bawajood bhi hum sab sunrahe hai... aap bataiyein ki hum kya kya kare film me, apko kaha kami lagrahi hai?"
(Loose translation: Those who boycott have their own truth, their own beliefs. Their opinion should also be respected. It is not that people call for a boycott just like that. There is some kind of displeasure. The filmmaker must listen, like we are. We are all listening. We have made a film in praise of Lord Ram, in his praise, yet we are all listening... Tell me what we should do in the film, where do you feel we are lacking?)
He continued: "Hum arrogant hoke, hum Ravan ki tarah ahankari hoke film nahi bana sakte. Lekin yeh jo boycott huwe hai unki kahani alag hai. Humari film ke sath mujhe boycott ka koi bhay nahi hai kyunki mai janta hu jitne log Bhagwan Sri Ram pe vishwas rakte hai, woh sab humari film ko apne haath pe rakhke hume support karenge. (We cannot be arrogant, we can't be egoistic like Ravana while making a film. But the boycott (Brahmastra and LSC faced) has a different story. There is no fear of boycott in me when it comes to our film (Adipurush) because I know that people who believe in Lord Shri Ram, they will support our film.)
He concluded by saying that he would never commit the crime of tarnishing the teachings of Lord Ram. "Main mrityun varan karna behtar samajhta hu, bajaiye iske ki mai aisi galti karu." (I am a better compromise to die than, rather than to do such a wrong thing.)
Adipurush is slated to hit the theatres on January 12, 2023.
