Coal India
Seeking shareholders’ approval to enter new business areas, including mining of critical minerals, such as lithium and cobalt, producing hydrogen as well as manufacturing and selling energy storage batteries.
The company has got the approval to set up a 1 million ton/year alumina refinery, 0.5 million ton/year aluminum smelter and a 1.4 GW captive power plant to feed to aluminum operations.
The company has yet to finalize sites for the aluminum project. Besides lithium, Coal India is also considering mining of nickel, vanadium, copper and manganese. The coal miner also plans to form a JV with Madhya Pradesh Power Generation Co. to build a 1,320 MW coal-fired plant that will supply to the grid.
Coal India said it’s prepared to reach annual production capacity of 1 billion tons by FY25, although actual production will depend on demand for the fuel. The company has 117 coal mining projects with a total capacity of 918.9 MTPA and sanctioned investment of almost Rs 1.33 lakh cr in different stages of implementation.
Of these, 42 projects are running behind due to reasons including delays in getting forest clearance, difficulties in getting land and rehabilitation of people.
