New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday took a swipe at the previous Congress-led UPA government on the launch of 5G telephony services, saying this was possible because of the right intentions of his government.
Speaking after launching 5G services in select cities at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2022 conference, PM Modi said, “The revolution in the telecom sector is proof that if the intentions of the government are correct, it takes no time for citizens' intentions to change.”
“2G ki niyat aur 5G ki niyat mein yehi farak hai (this is the difference between the intentions during 2G era and 5G era now),” the prime minister said in reference to the alleged 2G spectrum allocation scam in which politicians and private officials of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) coalition government in India were accused of selling or allotting 122 2G spectrum licenses on conditions that provided benefit to specific telecom operators.
Former Telecom Minister A Raja, along with 14 others, was the prime accused in the 2G scam case, which has caused a notional loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the Indian national exchequer, according to the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.
Earlier, PM Modi said the launch of the 5G telephony services that promise to provide ultra high-speed internet on mobile phones, marks the beginning of a new era and presents a sea of opportunities.
While the nation was dependent on foreign countries for technology for 2G, 3G and 4G telecom services, India has created history with 5G, he said.
The Prime Minister said the vision of his government for ‘Digital India’ was founded on four pillars -- the cost of devices, digital connectivity, data cost and digital-first approach.
He further said that India now has the world’s lowest data charges as tariffs have come down from Rs 300 per 1 GB of data in 2014 to Rs 10 per GB now.
