KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sanju Samson has one of the biggest fan following for a young Indian cricketer across the world
  • As the Indian team arrived in Thiruvananthapuram, which is Samson's home, the chants of 'Sanju Sanju' were all around
  • Samson isn't part of the Indian squad for the South Africa series and the T20 World Cup
Team India had a pretty elaborate overseas white-ball season in summer 2022 as they went to England, Ireland, West Indies and Zimbabwe before the Asia Cup 2022. Since a few first-choice players sought rest in most of those series, several others got a chance to represent India more regularly in both T20Is and ODIs.
Sanju Samson, who isn't a regular in the white-ball team, remained in and out of the side throughout the international assignments, however, the 27-year-old who is one of the favourites among fans is lucky to have so much support wherever he goes. Whether Ireland, West Indies or Zimbabwe, wherever and whenever Samson was named in India's playing XI, the Indian population in each of those countries were right behind him.
There was a huge furor when Samson was not named in the squads for Asia Cup and T20 World Cup as despite good returns in the games he has played, the Kerala lad, unfortunately, was never in the plans with the first-choice team. Samson got a chance in West Indies only when KL Rahul couldn't be fit in time for the T20Is.
Now that the Indian team is in Thiruvananthapuram, the chants of 'Sanju Sanju' were a given. As the Indian team arrived in the city, Samson's hometown, it was a 'Sanju Samson mania' despite the cricketer not being with the team. While Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal shared pictures of a huge crowd around the team bus chanting Samson's name, batter Suryakumar Yadav won millions of hearts in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday.
From the bus, Surya flashed a picture of Samson towards the fans amid the loud cheers for the poster boy of Kerala leaving the fans overjoyed.
Samson, who hasn't played for India since the Zimbabwe series is likely to make a comeback to the national side in the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa after captaining the India A team in three unofficial ODI against New Zealand A. The young batter would hope to keep pushing his case for a permanent place in the side as he has done well in the chances he has got this year.
