No time to hit the gym? Dr Michael Mosley shares a one-minute exercise just as effective as half-an-hour of workout

Dr Michal Mosley says that the idea here is to set the alarm for every 40 minutes or so when one sits down – and when it goes off, get up to perform a few squats or press ups or simply walk up and down the stars. This is known as exercise snacking as it is just as effective as single burst workouts and can be spread across the day.
Dr Michael Mosley stated that multiple short bursts of exercise can be better than trying to do a full-fledged workout in a go.

New Delhi: Weight loss is a gradual process, yes. It can sometimes take weeks or months of exercise and dieting – sometimes aggressive workouts and strict abstinence from specific foods. But not everyone has too much time to squeeze for fitness – thankfully, Dr Michael Mosley has come up with a simple exercise that can help burn calories in just one minute. The expert who helmed the 5:2 and Fast 800 diet for weight loss has a go-to fitness activity known as exercise alarm or exercise snacking which can encourage even the busiest of people to work towards fitness.
What is an exercise alarm?
Dr Michal Mosley says that the idea here is to set the alarm for every 40 minutes or so when one sits down – and when it goes off, get up to perform a few squats or press ups or simply walk up and down the stars. This is known as exercise snacking as it is just as effective as single burst workouts and can be spread across the day. It helps beat the habit of sitting in the same place for long durations.
Is exercise snacking better?
Dr Mosley stated that multiple short bursts of exercise can be better than trying to do a full-fledged workout in a go. It can help burn more calories, lose more weight and improve blood pressure and blood sugar impressively. The method, he said, is ideal for those who struggle to fit exercise into their daily routine. Stairs, he said, are a good way of exercise snacking.
But on the downside, the expert said that this alone won’t support weight loss goals. It has to be paired with lifestyle changes like eating a balanced diet and abstinence from smoking and alcohol for the purpose.
Combining this routine with the following dietary choices can be helpful for weight watchers:
  1. Eating whole grains
  2. Eating more fruits and vegetables
  3. Drinking lots of water
  4. Avoid alcohol and smoking
  5. Eat nuts and seeds
