Kolkata: Several stretches of roads in Kolkata are broken and filled with potholes, although this year Kolkata has received 50% less rainfall this year. The city has received only short spells of rains this monsoon which has not lasted for more than a minute. Even after that, the condition of roads in various parts of Kolkata is dangerous, especially for bikers and pedestrians.
Potholes present in multiple locations especially near offices, schools and colleges are becoming a huge problem for the people living in the city.
The broken and worn out roads during the monsoons along with the construction work for the metro is slowing down traffic at various locations resulting in traffic congestion in different parts of the city during office hours. The potholes are so deep that they can over-turn a two-wheeler.
The stretch of road near the Wipro office in Salt Lake sector 5, in the North East region of Kolkata usually causes vehicles to slow down. People have stopped taking that road during the rush hours to avoid traffic.
Another stretch of road known as the Basanti highway is also filled with deep potholes. The highway leads to a market area and hence, heavy vehicles like trucks and buses travel from that road on a daily basis.
“The condition of the road is seriously bad it is very difficult to drive on this road. You can see there are such big potholes, if you go ahead there are even big potholes present one can't drive. The road should be fixed. Our trucks are getting seriously damaged, the suspension pin gets out the tyres are harmed as well while driving on these roads”, a truck driver said while speaking to Mirror Now.
Another woman who is a resident of the area said “the vehicles can’t move properly causing traffic congestion in the area, we also can’t walk properly as these potholes are present everywhere.”
The condition of the road is seriously dangerous, especially for the two-wheelers. These stretches of roads are not well lighted as well, hence, the possibility of accidents is really high. The officials of the Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA), the organisation responsible for the maintenance of these roads were not available for comments.
