Mumbai: Dawood Ibrahim's aide Riyaz Bhati arrested in extortion case; to be produced before court today

Mumbai: The Mumbai Police's Anti Extortion Cell (AEC) on Monday arrested businessman Riyaz Bhati in connection with an extortion case. Bhati will be produced before a court on Tuesday.
Officials said that Bhati, who is suspected to have ties with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, was wanted in the extortion case filed at the Versova Police Station.
They added that a Versova-based businessman was threatened, and a car valued at Rs 30 lakh and cash worth Rs 7.5 lakh were sought from him.
Ibrahim's close ally Chhota Shakeel, as well as Shakeel's relative Salim Fruit, have been named in the FIR, said the officials.
The accused was held by the Mumbai Crime Branch's Anti Extortion Cell from the Andheri (West) area.
Bhati was arrested after being interrogated at the AEC office, he said, adding the accused will be produced before a court on Tuesday.
He had previously been arrested in multiple cases, including extortion, land grabbing, and shooting.
According to officials, he also attempted to flee the country using fake passports in 2015 and 2020.
The official said that Salim Qureshi alias Salim Fruit is currently in judicial custody after being arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in a case against the D-Company syndicate.
The case is being investigated further.
