Karimganj (Assam): In an incident of gross medical negligence, a senior doctor at a government hospital in Assam allegedly performed a caesarean section procedure, also known as C-section, on a pregnant woman three and half months before her delivery date and then stitched the cut after realising that the foetus was premature.
According to the doctor, after making the incision, he found that the foetus was premature and therefore, stitched back the cut and later advised the pregnant woman to wait till December for another attempt.
The incident took place at the Karimganj Civil Hospital on August 22 and the doctor who allegedly performed the C-section has been identified as senior physician Dr AK Biswas, reported Hindustan Times.
Meanwhile, the authorities of the Karimganj Civil Hospital on Sunday said an inquiry was being conducted to ascertain the facts, reported news agency PTI.
The doctor allegedly tried to manage the woman after the C-section attempt and asked her family not to discuss it with anyone. However, the matter came to the fore of her relatives and neighbours when the patient's health worsened after she was discharged from the hospital on August 31.
“We have received the information about the incident and we are conducting an inquiry to ascertain the facts. Any action against the doctor or anyone else, found responsible for the incident, will be taken depending on the inquiry report," the hospital authorities said.
An 11-member committee has been formed to look into the matter and the preliminary report in his regard has been submitted on Friday, the hospital authorities added.
"The preliminary report has been forwarded to the Health Department in Guwahati. We are awaiting submission of the full report," they said as quoted by PTI.
As per reports, the pregnant woman was admitted to the Karimganj Civil Hospital on August 21 after she complained of severe pain.
The family members of the woman alleged that after giving initial treatment and keeping her in observation for two days, the doctor decided to conduct a C-section on August 23 without performing any ultrasound examination. Although the doctor was aware that she was due to deliver a baby in early December, he went for the surgery.
After making the incision, the doctor realised that the foetus was premature and stitched back the cut, leaving the foetus intact inside, reported PTI.
The woman was then discharged from the hospital on August 31 and the doctor had allegedly asked her family to not divulge the matter to anyone.
However, as the health condition of the woman started worsening after she returned home, her neighbours and relatives came to know of it.
The enraged family members along with their relatives and neighbours informed the matter to the hospital authorities, prompting them to order the inquiry.
The woman has been admitted to the same hospital and she is currently undergoing treatment there, reported PTI.
An ultrasound examination performed on the woman on Friday which revealed that the foetus is unharmed, informed the family members of the pregnant woman.
