Kyiv: Ukraine’s army is targeting Russian soldiers who are occupying the Zaporizhzhia nuclear facility in the south of the country. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a video address, on Saturday, said Ukraine’s army is targeting Russian troops who shoot at the occupied nuclear plant or use it as a base to shoot from.
“Every Russian soldier who either shoots at the plant or shoots using the plant as cover, must understand that he becomes a special target for our intelligence agents, for our special services, for our army,” Zelensky said as quoted by Reuters.
However, the Ukrainian President did not divulge any detail in this regard. Notably, both Ukraine and Russia accuse each other of shelling the nuclear plant. The G7 group have urged Moscow to withdraw its soldiers from the nuclear power station.
The Zaporizhzhia plant is the largest nuclear power station in Europe. The plant has been under the control of Russia since March, days after it invaded Ukraine. The nuclear facility is still being operated by Ukrainian staff.
Vladimir Rogov, a member of the Moscow-installed regional administration accused Ukraine of targetting the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant with multiple launch rocket systems and heavy artillery. Meanwhile, Zelensky’s adviser Mykhailo Podolyak also alleged that Russian forces hit the nuclear facility.
Earlier this month, Rafael Grossi, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), also warned that the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant was “completely out of control”.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. Russian troops are now eying to consolidate their position in the Donbas region comprising the separatist republics of Donetsk and Lugansk.
