Deepti Sharma's clever run-out to dismiss Charlotte Dean in the historic Lord's ODI between India and England's Women cricket teams has sparked massive debates in the cricket fraternity. The 'Mankading' episode has brought an almost-century old debate to the forefront of cricket conversations once again.
Following the incident on Saturday (September 24) evening, social media was filled with reactions with plenty of current England men's team players like Stuart Broad, Sam Billings, and James Anderson voicing their dismay. However, a lot of people supported Deepti which included senior Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and legendary Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin.
Among the debate, many Indian cricket fans have been quick to remind English fans of the 2019 Men's ODI World Cup final in which England got lucky with an overthrow that gave them six runs. Many cricket experts had argued that the umpire had made the wrong decision and the hosts should not have got six runs. Ironically, that incident had also taken place at Lord's, the venue for the latest cricketing controversy.
After three days of the discussion being a hot topic on social media, Stokes has finally reacted and expressed his dismay at the two incidents being compared. Stokes called what happened in 2019 as a 'deflection' and put up a cryptic GIF alongside his post. "Why are people comparing a ball deflecting of my bat to a Mankad?" Stokes wrote on Twitter.
After the team returned back to India, Deepti revealed that it was a team plan to dismiss Dean after repeated warnings to the England batter. "It was a plan, because we had warned her [for leaving the crease early] repeatedly. We did things as per the rules and guidelines. We told the umpires as well, but she was there [outside the crease]. We couldn't do much," Deepti told reporters on her arrival at the Kolkata airport.
