Texas, United States: A man who has been collecting Sonic the Hedgehog memorabilia for 30 years has earned a Guinness World Record after his cache of items was officially tallied at 3,050.
Barry Evans started out by buying a copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - his first-ever video game - to play on Sega Genesis back in 1992 and got obsessed with the 2D character in the side-scrolling platform game.
While it was the first item in his Guinness World Record-breaking collection, a Sonic-themed bubble gum container came in 1993, Evans told GWR.
"Later I saw a poster and more toys, and I just started decorating my room with it, he explained.
Sonic The Hedgehog has been his “passion for 30 years," the collector said.
Some of the Evans’ most treasured items in over 3,000 collectibles are giant statues of Sonic and his sidekick, Tails. They were displayed at a Toys ‘R’ Us store for years.
But the Texas man’s Sonic the Hedgehog isn’t just about mainstream memorabilia you can find at a shop down the street. According to Evans, the most unique item in his memorabilia is a mould for creating Sonic toys for British Burger King restaurants.
A pair of Sonic and Tails plush walkie-talkies from Japan is his most recent addition to the cache.
"It was just incredible to have Guinness World Records give me vindication for my collection,” he said of his certification. “To have my collection recognized by Guinness World Records is a life-fulfilling event to me."
