In another incident of a school shooting in the United States of America, a gunman identified as Salvador Ramos opened fire in Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. This again opens the debate about the obsession of USA's gun obsession in the wake of the fact that many children die due to gun violence every year in the country.
Civilians in the US own over 390 million firearms which translates to over 120 guns per 100 citizens in the country. However, the more important talking point is about the rise in gun violence in America. Despite being a superpower, the US has been struggling to contain the trigger menace for decades and US school shootouts have only grown.
Gun violence has fuelled deaths across the USA and despite a number of policy changes regarding the ownership and use of guns and addition of enhancements to make them deadlier. It is to be noted that over 14,00,000 civilians have died in the US in the last fifty years due to gun violence as per a CDS report.
The gun rights in America are a sensitive topic that tends to polarise people on either end of the spectrum. The pro-gun lobby is a very strong one with a market of over a billion US dollars.
From Barack Obama, Donald Trump to Joe Biden - US presidents have time and again made passionate speeches against the gun culture that is killing innocent Americans but the ground reality has changed a little.
The Second Amendment has been defended by millions and is also seen as a political card for the Republicans who have defended the citizens' right to protect themselves. However, the US school shootouts have made even the staunchest of gun supporters to take notice.
Current US President Joe Biden has cracked down on boost guns and modifications to pistols that turn them into deadlier weapons with enhanced bullet-carrying capacity.
