The nature of sporting affairs at Manchester United isn't hidden from any fan. The ardent supporters of the club are keen for the Glazers family to move out and a new owner to come in. While nothing concrete has happened so far, as far as the change in ownership of Manchester United is concerned, billionaire inventor Elon Musk has said that he is 'buying Manchester United'.
The tweet seems to have come as part of a joke from Elon on Twitter, the micro-blogging platform he was close to purchasing not long ago. The post about purchasing the Red Devils came as part of a 2-tweet thread. The first tweet read: “To be clear, I support the left half of the Republican Party and the right half of the Democratic Party.”
Musk has the reputation of posting irrelevant tweets and the one about purchasing United seems to be on the same lines. He later clarified that he was joking.
Soon after Musk's tweets, a social media debate among Twitteratis started on the platform.
“You don’t want it man, trust me This man signed a deal to buy Twitter for USD 44 billion without doing any due diligence then realized it was a bad deal. Backed out, and is being sued,” one user said.
"Why in the world would you buy a team that plays glorified jogging instead of real American football? Way more people watch football than soccer," said another.
Even Manchester United fans started joking on the topic, talking about how such a move would help the club get rid of the dead wood and bring in quality players.
As far as Manchester United's reputation as a brand is concerned, the club was bought by the Glazers for 790 million pounds in 2005. United is said to have a market capitalization of $2.08 billion at present.
Manchester United haven't had the best of the starts to the new season, losing both of their first two games. On a sporting level, the Red Devils seem to be in a real crisis, with the club's talisman Cristiano Ronaldo also reportedly looking to leave.
