Kolkata: From Friday, Metro Railway will resume operating its 288-service pre-pandemic fleet. Starting July 1, six additional trains will be added along the North-South line, returning the carrier's service levels to previous levels. However, business hours would continue to be marginally fewer than they were prior to the pandemic.
The Kavi Subhas-Dakshineswar line currently has 282 trains running in each direction. Six additional trains will be added, according to officials, as all schools reopen on Monday.
"From Friday, there will be 288 services instead of 282, running from Monday to Friday. In all, 144 trains will run in each direction. Of these, 172 services will run (86 Up and 86 Down) between Kavi Subhas and Dakshineswar. Trains will ply at 5-minute intervals during peak hours.” A Metro Railway communique said on Saturday.
On weekdays, the Sector V-Phoolbagan segment of the East-West Metro only has 48 trains running between 8 am and 7:45 pm. Only 2,000 people each day use Kolkata's Line 2. Line 2 in Kolkata does not operate on Sundays.
The last trains on Sundays often run according to the weekday schedule. On the Kavi Subhas-Dakshineswar corridor, Metro would run 124 trains on Sundays before the epidemic, but six additional trains were added to ensure social isolation on Sundays when a lot more people traveled.
The North-South line will offer 282 services on Saturdays, operating at the same hours as during the week. There are 130 services on Sunday that begin at 9 am, according to TOI.
