Bengaluru: The Karnataka leg of 'Bharat Jodo Yatra', which is being led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, will begin on Friday. The march will enter Karnataka via Gundlupet in Chamarajanagar district bordering Kerala.
Congress hopes that its workers will be rejuvenated ahead of next year's Assembly Elections following the march in Karnataka, which will cover about 511 km over 21 days.
As Congress is in the process of electing its new president to succeed Sonia Gandhi, this leg of the yatra is expected to gain national attention.
Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar and All India Congress Committee general secretary KC Venugopal have said that the party's interim president Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will take part in the yatra separately and that the dates will be announced soon.
Meanwhile, Shivakumar said that the Karnataka leg of the yatra will commence from Gundlupet at 9 am on September 30. He added that on October 2, i.e. Gandhi Jayanti, a programme will be held at Badanavalu in Nanjangud Taluk, famous for its Khadi and Gramodyog Centre (visited by Mahatma Gandhi).
"There will be two days holiday for Dasara; there will be a public meeting in Ballari; in between Rahul Gandhi will be interacting with youth, women, civil society, students, tribal community and farmers among others each day, and teams have been formed for this," he said.
As part of the preparation for the yatra, Congress has carried out outreach programs at the grassroots level and will expand these efforts during the march by organising Rahul Gandhi's interaction with civil society members, farmers, tribal community, women's groups, entrepreneurs, and business community representatives.
It is also likely that some members of civil society will join the yatra, news agency PTI mentioned sources within the party as saying.
A number of districts will be covered in the yatra, such as Chamarajanagar, Mysuru, Mandya, Tumakuru, Chitradurga, Ballari, and Raichur. The march will enter Telangana from Raichur.
A massive public rally is planned for October 19 in Ballari before leaving the state via Raichur.
For the Congress, Ballari is significant because Sonia Gandhi won the 1999 Lok Sabha election from there, and the party also marched to the district to protest the then BJP government and the alleged mining mafia, which contributed to its victory during the 2013 Assembly Elections.
The KPCC has appointed in-charge leaders for all the days, and committees have been formed to handle logistics, food, and accommodation.
