PM Modi inaugurates IndiaMobileCongress 2022 launches 5G in India What to expect from 5G rollout
PM Modi inaugurated the India Mobile Congress 2022, being held in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. The Prime Minister will be launching the new mobile internet technology 5G, in the country. While there is a lot of hype around 5G, here is what YOU should expect with this new high speed mobile broadband technology.
Much faster mobile internet speeds than 4G/3G/2G mobile internet
That’s right!, Mobile internet speeds on 5G, the technology is designed to offer 20Gbps of bandwidth, while that’s theoretical, 10Gbps speeds are closer to reality, which is 100 times faster than 4G. While on paper the speeds are much higher, on the ground with network congestion, coverage and interference the speeds will be much lower, however, they will still be much faster than 4G.
Binge watchers
If you are someone who loves streaming video up or down, 5G will enable faster, higher quality and more reliable streaming capability. If today you stream at 720p with 5G rollout, streaming a video at 4K resolution will become a possibility. The higher bandwidth will not only help OTT platforms, but live streaming in higher quality will also become a reality.
Faster Downloads
Higher mobile bandwidth with 5G will enable much faster downloads, with fixed line broadband like reliability. Transferring files to your cloud storage will be faster and reliable making cloud storage not just a backup storage option but a real time storage option like a physical hard drive.
Experiences
5G is not just for the faster mobile internet, or watching YouTube videos in 4K/60p, 5G technology will enable higher quality experiences for the end user. With high bandwidth a lot of new experiences are being worked upon. Some of them are as follows
Gaming - Gaming sector is expected to see a boost with 5G, high quality mobile gaming experiences with technologies like augmented reality, virtual reality will becoming a reality. While Google is shutting down Stadia, Cloud gaming would benefit with 5G. And off course a lower ping and less lag can be expected from the 5G technology.
VR applications - Virtual reality or VR applications will become a part of our lives, VR applications in e-learning, trouble shooting, healthcare, and gaming will get a boost with the high network capacity of 5G.
Meta verse - 5G rollout will help speed up the Metaverse applications and use case.
Connected Cars - With 5G, connected car technology will get the support of a much-needed high bandwidth pipeline. Today many auto majors in India provide a 4G sim in their connected car package, with 5G services rolling out, your smart car will be able to send and receive large amount data, enabling better telemetry, autonomous driving, OTA updates, making the car more of a platform for better experiences and services. You would also be able to stream your favorite Tv series on your car infotainment systems.
Healthcare - Remote diagnosis will be much easier as your smartphone itself will have a high bandwidth capability to send high quality video. VR based applications and remote monitoring of patients and more will benefit from 5G.
Education - Remote learning will see a boost, with VR based applications on 5G. An educator from another country will be able to teach students in remote village of India using 5G technology.
Now here are some challenges we can expect
Higher costs - Service providers are expected charge higher for 5G services, as network expands and users increase the prices will stabilise.
Coverage - During the initial rollout, mobile service providers will not be able to cover the length and breath of India. We expect 5G to rollout in major tier-1 cities first, eventually getting to tier-2,3 cities and in a couple of years to all of the country.
Data - With higher bandwidth expect your data packs to get over faster. While streaming videos in 4K will be a great experience, however, it will exhaust your data pack that much faster. Unlimited data plans with a high FUP is the way to go on 5G.
Network quality - 5G signals can be blocked by walls and glass due to their shorter wavelengths, this means than you can expect a bit of a trouble getting good 5G signals inside your house or in the basement. In such cases there will always be 4G to fall back upon.
