KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • ICC has agreed to BCCI's demands
  • IPL will get an extended window in the new FTP
  • The 2023-27 FTP will be released officially after ICC's AGM
In a move that clearly signals the future of the sport, the International Cricket Council (ICC) seems to have agreed to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) demands and given the Indian Premier League a two-and-half-month exclusive window in the cricketing calender from 2024.
According to a report from EspnCricinfo, ICC's new Future Tours Programme (FTP) will have an exclusive window for the IPL from the last week of March to the first week of June. Last month, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had said that the BCCI will demand IPL's window to be increased in the new FTP.
Following IPL's blockbuster media-rights deal, which made them the second most valuable league in the world (on a per match basis), the league is set to see an increase in matches per season. In the next couple of years, the Indian domestic T20 extravaganza could become a 84 or 94 match affair according to various reports.
During the IPL's window, there is almost no international cricket scheduled which will allow the world's best players to participate in the competition. Both England and Australia have also kept an exclusive window for the Hundred and BBL respectively.
The England Cricket Board (ECB) has kept a 3-4 week window clear of any international cricket for the Hundred in July-August while Australia have managed to ensure that no white-ball international cricket takes place in January. This move will allow the white-ball specialists in both countries to feature in their marquee franchise cricket leagues.
However, the difference between the window for the IPL and other leagues is that international cricket around the world will not stop when the BBL and Hundred are taking place. Even Cricket South Africa (CSA) has managed to do the same for its upcoming T20 league in 2024 and 2025.
The new FTP in which the international cricket schedule from May 2023 to April 2027 will be decided is set to be announced officially after ICC's AGM which is scheduled to take place in Birmingham on July 25 and 26.
