Porsche Unveils one-off Cayenne SUV with Targa top

As part of the Porsche Cayenne’s 20th-year anniversary celebrations, the German automaker has unveiled a prototype of the sporty SUV with a foldable rooftop. The Cayenne convertible SUV was never revealed to the public, up until now. This prototype was conceived to examine the practicality of the Targa top on the SUV.

For the first time, Porsche has revealed the photos of the Cayenne prototype with the Targa rooftop. The German automaker experimented with a lot of body styles before releasing its first-ever sports utility vehicle. The open-top Targa version was one of them and while it was never made official. The company has decided to reveal the images of this one-off prototype Targa Cayenne on the occasion of the luxury SUV’s 20th anniversary.
The Targa Cayenne was based on the existing SUV. A soft top version was also in the works. Irrespective of that, the convertible Cayenne SUVs featured shorter A-pillars, a truncated windshield, and fold-open rear panels that revealed the car's soft-top. The entire SUV measures 17.55-inches long, and instead of the conventional four doors, it featured a two-door setup. The doors were 7.87-inches longer than the standard units.

The mechanisms of the convertible top were similar in function to the one available with the current 992-911 Targa models. However, the system was never fitted to the car, so the roof you see here is manually folded.

Porsche also experimented with multiple rear profiles. Unable to come to a fixed design they kept the rear fascia in the Targa Cayenne deliberately asymmetrical. While the left side will remind you of the Carrera GT, the right side with its high-set tail lights will remind you of the first ever Panamera.
The Cayenne SUV has been a very important car for Porsche. From selling in mass numbers to paving the investment for more R&D. The automaker is currently readying itself for the launch of an all-electric SUV that will sit above the Cayenne. The seating configuration is yet to be confirmed, but it will be based on Volkwagen’s Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) which also underpins the 3rd-gen Panamera and the 2nd-gen Taycan.
