Tamil Nadu: Woman poisons alcoholic abusive husband; arrested

The police said that the woman got fed up of her husband who had become an alcoholic after leaving his job as a lorry driver, leaving them in a financial crisis. The man used to beat her and their children every day after coming home drunk. Therefore, she decided to poison him.

Uvari: Police in Uvari have arrested a woman for allegedly poisoning her husband. The police said that woman poisoned her husband because he had been very abusing towards her and other family members. The woman told the police that reportedly her husband used to regularly beat and torture the woman and other family members.
The woman further told the police that her husband was an alcoholic and whenever he came home drunk, he would regularly fight and beat her and other family members.
Police said that C. Singaravelan, 41, a former lorry driver from Kunjanvilai under Uvari police station limits in the district, had stopped working after he became addicted to alcohol. This created a financial crisis for the family. When his wife, Jayakodi, 40, asked him to find some work for himself, he started torturing her and their children under the influence of alcohol almost every day. Since the family was left without any source of income, Jayakodi was compelled to become a beedi roller to feed her three children, The Hindu.
The police said that earlier Singaravelan was reportedly arrested for damaging the banner of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Thisaiyanvilai. Later he was released on bail and once he was back home, he was back to his old ways and once again started torturing and abusing his family members after he became drunk.
According to the police Singaravelan was found lying unconscious in his house on Monday. After neighbours informed Uvari police, the investigators arrived at the spot and checked him for a pulse but there was none and the police concluded that he had died. Police began questioning his family members who initially denied knowing anything about it. But when they asked Jayakodi more sternly, she reportedly confessed that she had poisoned her husband as she could not bear his torture anymore.
After arresting Jayakodi, police sent the body of Singaravel to Kanniyakumari District Government Medical College Hospital at Aasaaripallam for a post-mortem and have registered a case and begun their investigations.
