KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jonny Bairstow scored his third consecutive Test century
  • Bairstow helped England avoid the follow-on
  • This was Bairstow's fifth Test century in 2022
Continuing his golden run of form in Test cricket, Jonny Bairstow scored a century for the third match in a row in the ongoing clash between India and England at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham. After scoring back-to-back tons in the series against New Zealand, Bairstow reached the three-figure mark in just 119 balls against India on Day 3 of action.
Bairstow's start of the innings was less than ideal as he struggled to get going against the Indian pacers. With the Indian bowlers on top, ex-captain Virat Kohli indulged in a heated war of words with the 32-year-old from the slip cordon in an attempt to get under his skin. Since that exchange, Bairstow's innings regained momentum and he blasted the Indian bowling unit to all corners of the ground.
Reacting to Bairstow's exceptional knock, Virender Sehwag posted a hilarious tweet blaming Kohli's sledge for the 32-year-old changing guards. Sehwag compared Bairstow's batting style with Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant.
"Jonny Bairstow's Strike Rate before Kohli's Sledging -: 21 Post Sledging - 150 Pujara ki tarah khel rahe thhey, Kohli ne Pant banwa diya bewajah sledge karke (He was batting like Pujara, Kohli turned him into Pant for no reason)," wrote Sehwag on Twitter.
Bairstow's ton on Sunday (July 3) is his fifth in Test cricket in 2022. He is also the highest run-scorer in the longest format of the game this year as through the course of his innings at Edgbaston he overtook Usman Khawaja's run tally to seal the top spot.
Bairstow's knock has helped England avoid the follow-on. Earlier in the day, skipper Ben Stokes was dismissed for a knock of just 25. Sam Billings gave Bairstow a solid support so far on the crease. India had earlier put up a total of 416 on the board.
