Jammu: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Sunday said that he will hold meetings with his workers and leaders to discuss the formation of his own political party. He is likely to launch his party in the next couple of days.
Azad, who parted ways with the Congress in August, said that he will hold a press conference on Monday.
“I will hold a press conference tomorrow. Today, I will hold meetings with my workers and leaders,” he told reporters in a brief interaction at his residence in Jammu upon his arrival from Delhi.
He further said that the name and the flag of Azad's new party have been finalised and it is now a matter of a day or two before it will be launched.
Azad will have two back-to-back separate meetings with senior and second-rung leaders later on Sunday, a close aide of the former Congress leader told news agency PTI, adding that he is visiting Srinagar on September 27.
The 73-year-old veteran political leader ended his five-decade-long association with the Congress on August 26, terming the party “comprehensively destroyed”. He also lashed out at Rahul Gandhi for “demolishing” the party's entire consultative mechanism.
In support of Azad, over two dozen prominent Congress leaders including former deputy chief minister Tara Chand, several former ministers and legislators also resigned from the Congress party. Two former legislators, one each of the PDP and Apni party, also followed suit.
Later, Azad announced floating his own political party in Jammu and Kashmir. He also shared the three agendas of his yet-to-be-named party, which included the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, protection of land and job rights of its residents, and the return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandit.
