Laal Singh Chaddha, starring Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan, is arguably the most-anticipated film of 2022, thus far. As revealed by Aamir, the journey of the comedy-drama kickstarted way back in 2008 and it took 14 long years to complete the film.
Directed by Advait Chandan, Laal Singh Chaddha finally opens in theatres on August 11, Thursday. Fans can hardly keep calm as Aamir is returning to the big screen after almost 4 years.
With just a few hours to go for the release of the film, the first reviews of it are out. International film critics have watched the Hindi remake of Tom Hanks' cult classic Forrest Gump and have given their verdict on the same.
While Laal Singh Chaddha has received unanimous praise, it is Aamir’s performance as Laal that has got mixed reviews.
Proma Khosla of Indie Wire lauded Laal Singh Chaddha for standing on its own as she wrote, “Instead of a box of chocolates or the obvious Indian equivalent, the film takes things a step further, adding strong depth and resonance to what could otherwise have been an unremarkable adaptation. Laal Singh Chaddha measures its emotional beats tactically, deploying poignant punches sporadically throughout.”
Fred Topel of United Press International called Aamir starrer faithful to the original. “Laal Singh Chaddha is faithful to Forrest Gump from the floating feather to the plot structure. Since the history is less vital to the narrative, it gives the story itself more weight, with some new thematic context,” wrote Fred.
Witney Seibold of Slashfilm.com called Laal Singh Chaddha a 'superior version' of the 1994 blockbuster but wasn't much impressed with Aamir's performance.
"Laal Singh Chaddha might still be as fitfully mawkish as "Gump" in its tendency toward brazen sentimentality, but is a film more deliberately rooted in philosophies of gentleness. It is the superior version," Witney said.
Carlos Aguilar of The Wrap shared similar views as Witney's as he wrote, "Not that Tom Hanks’ performance as Forrest could ever be hailed as a paragon of subtle acting, but Khan’s interpretation of the character borders on parody. The exaggerated facial expressions and laughter read as disparagingly theatrical, even if that’s not their intent.”
Meanwhile, besides Aamir and Kareena, Laal Singh Chaddha also features Mona Singh and Naga Chaitanya in pivotal roles.
