Record-time European champions Real Madrid will cross swords with the German Bundesliga club for the first time in 62 years in the upcoming UEFA Super Cup on Thursday.

The traditional curtain-raiser of the new UEFA season 2022-2023 will be contested at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium. The 2022 edition of the UEFA Super Cup will be the first-ever appearance of Frankfurt in the elite competition. When Frankfurt secured the UEFA Cup in 1980, the European Cup Winners' Cup holders squared off against European Cup winners for the Super Cup. Overwhelming favourites Real Madrid are set to make their eighth appearance in the Super Cup this season. All of Madrid's appearances have arrived after securing the European title.

Record-time Champions League winners Real Madrid have won four UEFA Super Cups in their last seven appearances. Madrid were outclassed by derby rivals Atletico (4-2) in their previous outing at the UEFA Super Cup 2018. Interestingly, the record-time European champions are not the most successful team at the UEFA Super Cup. Serie A giants AC Milan and Madrid's Clasico rivals FC Barcelona have won the Super Cup five times. Madrid and Liverpool have lifted the famous trophy on four occasions while Atletico have recorded Super Cup success on three occasions.

Atletico have defeated Champions League winners in 2010, 2012 and 2018 at the UEFA Super Cup.
