September 30 is also the day that celebrates the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator, who is considered to be the patron saint of translators. He is known for translating most of the Bible into Latin from the Greek manuscripts of the New Testament. He also translated parts of the Hebrew Gospel into Greek.

International Translation Day history

In 1991, the International Federation of Translators (FIT) launched the idea of an officially recognised International Translation Day to pay tribute to the work of language professionals, who play an important role in facilitating dialogue, understanding and cooperation.
On 24 May 2017, the General Assembly adopted resolution 71/288 declaring September 30 International Translation Day, recognising the role of professional translation in connecting nations.
