Samsung's latest Galaxy Z Fold4 and even the Z Flip4 outlast S22 Ultra in Battery tests

Samsung's latest foldable duo outlasted the company's Flagship - S22 Ultra in a controlled battery test done by Techdroider.
Samsungs latest Galaxy Z Fold4 and even the Z Flip4 outlast S22 Ultra in Battery tests
Samsung recently launched its foldable smartphones - The Galaxy Z Fold4 and Z Flip4, the foldable duo in their 4th generation come with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. Meanwhile, the Flagship non-foldable smartphone from the company is the Galaxy S22 Ultra which is usually launched early on in the year and comes with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. However, the S22 Ultra gets better cameras, a high-resolution display, and also a bigger battery along with a stylus built in the body. The Galaxy S22 Ultra is powered by a 5,000mAh battery, the same as the S21 Ultra. Meanwhile, the new Z Fold4 comes with a 4400 mAh battery and the stylish Z Flip4 comes with a 3700mAh of battery.
A battery test comparison conducted by TechDroider a YouTuber shows some shocking results. Samsung's 2022 flagship the Galaxy S22 Ultra was the first to run out of juice at 8hrs and 56 mins. Meanwhile, the newly launched Galaxy Z Flip4 with a considerably smaller battery capacity outlasted the S22 ultra at 9 hours and 4mins. The Galaxy Z Fold4 lasted 9 hours and 18 mins.
While smartphones with 9 hours of screen on time are amazing, to begin with, the results are interesting for sure, a device with 5000mAh of battery gets beaten by the same company's newer devices with considerably smaller batteries is intriguing. There could be multiple reasons for this and let's look at them one by one.
  • Samsung S22 Ultra was launched in February 2022 - The device has been around for a while now, with constant testing, and usage, the battery inside the device could degrade and lower the performance.
  • Snapdinosaur - The S22 Ultra comes with the slightly older Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, while the latest foldable duo from Samsung comes with the latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. The former is built on Samsung's 4nm process while the latter is based on TSMC's 4nm fab. Qualcomm reportedly chose TSMC for 8+ Gen 1 due to thermal (heating) issues emanating from the 8 Gen 1 SoC. Thermal issues mean throttling and all this work means battery life will get affected.
  • Samsung's Optimization - Learning from the S22 Ultra launch, the latest Fold 4 and Flip 4 could have been optimized by Samsung to use the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in the best possible manner.
Qualcomm claims the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 has a power efficiency improvement of 30% in comparison to Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, and this battery test proves it.
What does it mean for you?
Without getting into the competition and other phones tested, the foldable smartphones with their fancy folding designs are not just cutting-edge tech, they come without compromise on battery life. Let alone S22 Ultra, if a compact stylish foldable like Galaxy Z Flip4 with a 3700mAh battery can last up to 9 hours, this should atleast take away the battery life issues from the minds of prospective buyers.
